1) Mockingjay
Have you read any of The Hunger Games series? I read the whole series this summer, culminating in the finale, Mockingjay, which I finished a few weeks ago. AMAZING! The first book, titled The Hunger Games, was very good. I didn’t like the second one, Catching Fire, as much. I thought the first half was SO slow. But Suzanne Collins totally redeemed herself with this last one. The ending was not what I expected, but kind of too true with how things often happen. That’s all I will say.
2.) We the Animals by Joseph Torres
Overrated! I wouldn’t say it was bad at all, just overrated. It has all this hype going right now, and while it is a very artistic book, I’m not sure why. It was NOT what I expected it to be about, wow, but again, such an artistically written story. I am glad I read it still just to see. You know when a book is pretty good you just don’t think it deserves as much hype as it’s gotten? That’s this book. Read it and let me know what you think.
3) Medium Raw – Anthony Bourdain — He is getting too pretentious and contradictory for me. He contradicts his previous pretentious comments back and forth and it makes no sense. I still LOVE his show so I’ll just stick with that and forget the rest of what he does! The book had some good chapters and some terrible ones. I really like him so I am just going to pretend I didn’t read this (it’s not even great writing) and stick with my previous opinion of him. 😉
4) The Lost City of Z – David Grann — Very interesting non-fiction book about a Victorian-era explorer in the Amazon that disappeared and was never found. Subsequent attempts to find him have resulted in other expeditions being totally lost and never seen again as well. The author goes in search for the original explorer again and finds out things along the way.
5) Oryx and Crake – by Margaret Atwood — HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Wow, so philosophical and crazy and creative yet could possibly happen. LOVED it. It’s a PAW (post-apocalyptic world) book, a genre I also really love. B had been bugging me to read it forever and I am so glad I did. This book is about our future as humans and where we are headed, with a powerful message about mankind.
And…currently reading World War Z (which is currently being made into a movie starring Brad Pitt); also currently reading “The Fallen Kings” from my favorite historical fiction series The Morland Dynasty (by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles)… This is my FAVORITE series as you know but for some reason this ONE book in it isn’t very good and I am having such trouble getting through it.
Have you read any of these? Thoughts? Of all of these books I would most recommend Oryx and Crake. What else do you recommend for me next (especially older books that I could get at the library because I can’t really buy any right now)? I heart books. I have yet to read the Hunger Games – but God, I need to! I’ve only heard about it through blogs.
I have that Bourdain book here but haven’t read it yet, but I’ve heard he’s quite ‘pretentious’ in it to say the least.
I just finished reading Monica Seles’ book “Getting A Grip” – do you know her? She’s the tennis player that got stabbed at a match in her prime playing days. After that everything went downhill and she struggled with binge eating and her weight for years. There is just SO much in that book that I learned from her. She’s amazing. I recommend it even if your not a tennis fan 😉
Have you read LOTR trilogy? The best Sci-fi.
Love LOTR! Read it for the first time in 6th grade and once since. 🙂 I remember when the movies came out some of my friends hadn’t even heard of the books and I was appalled!
I have heard of Monica Seles’ book from a magazine article but haven’t read it. I know she has an amazing story so I should get it. It’s now on my list! Thanks. 🙂 And you must get The Hunger Games, a quick and absorbing read. 🙂
I have really wanted to read that book about the explorers in the Amazon. I’ve heard about it several times on podcasts like National Geographic, NPR, and even Jillian Michaels! I need to get that as soon as I finish the ones I’m currently reading!
I don’t know if you like historical fiction, but Phillipa Gregory does an AWESOME job of portraying all the characters and I’m never bored. And it makes history a little more interesting to read about.
Historical fiction is my favorite genre! It is mostly what I read. I love Phillipa Gregory, I own almost all of her books. She is great. 🙂
I loved the hunger games series. So easy to fly through and amazing story. I also love Margaret Atwood but haven’t read that book yet— thanks for mentioning it!
I haven’t read any of her other books but I want to read “The Handmaid’s Tale”.
